Bangladesh relaxes Covid restrictions from July 15

Bangladesh government on Monday announced that the ongoing countrywide ‘strict Covid restrictions’ would be relaxed from July 15 to July 22.

A press information department handout said this in the evening on Monday, the day when Bangladesh reported 220 daily Covid deaths and record high daily Covid cases of 13,768.

The handout said that the restrictions would resume from July 23 and a circular would be issued by the Cabinet Division on Tuesday in this regard.

Though the handout did not mention the reasons of the relaxation, sources in the government said that the relaxation was announced considering the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha to be celebrated in the country on July 21.

Meanwhile, railways affairs minister Md Nurul Islam Sujon said that all trains would run from July 15 to July 22 maintaining health protocols and keeping half of the seats vacant.

‘The tickets will only be available online and no tickets will be available at ticket counters,’ the minister said.

On June 30, the government ordered a weeklong ‘strict restrictions’ shutting down all public and private offices except the emergency ones and barring people from coming out of home without emergency with effect from July 1 in the wake of rising Covid cases.

On July 5, it extended the restrictions from July 7 to July 14 considering the Covid situation amid more people and private vehicles coming out on streets despite facing arrests and fines for restriction violations.
