Islamic preacher Mahmudul Gunabi extremists’ leader, arrested: RAB

Rapid Action Battalion on Friday said that they arrested Islamic preacher Mahmudul Hasan Gunabi from Shah Ali area in Bangladesh capital Dhaka.

RAB said this in a message sent to journalists at around noon on Friday, 10 days after Gunbi went missing from his district, Noakhali.

The RAB message said that Mahmudul Hasan Gunbi alias Hasan was a spiritual leader of ‘banned extremist outfit “Ansar Al Islam”’.

RAB said that they would detail about his arrest in a press conference at the elite force’s media centre at Karwanbazar in Dhaka later on the day.

In a press conference in Noakhali district town, Gunbi’s family claimed that he had gone missing as a group of plainclothes men picked him from Noakhali on July 6.

Mahmudul’s wife Saraban Tahura had said that Mahmudul went to meet his acquaintance Yusuf to Karmullah union on July 6.

A group of plainclothesmen identifying themselves as members of law enforcement agencies picked him up there, she alleged.

Mahmudul, a Mufti, is son of late Abdul Kadir of Gohnabati village in Chowddagram of Cumilla.

He is a known face in the Islamic circle of social media where he speaks in favour of Taliban and their ‘winning’ in Afghanistan.
