6, including five siblings, dead in Cox’s Bazar landslides

Six people including five minor siblings were killed in landslides triggered by rains in Teknaf and Maheshkhali upazilas of Cox's Bazar early today.

A landslide killed three sons and two daughters of Syed Alam, while the family was asleep, at Bhilagerpara in Teknaf's Hnila union around 2:00am, UP Chairman Rashed Mahmud Ali told.

Sukkur (16), Mohammad Zubaer (12), Abdul Latif (10), Kohinur Akter (14) and Zainab Akter (8) died on the spot, our Cox's Bazar correspondent reports, quoting the UP chairman, who visited the spot soon after the incident.

The UP chairman said he sought emergency assistance from the administration as hundreds of houses in his area has been flooded and damaged due to the incessant rains.

Confirming the incident, Hossain, a sub-inspector of Teknaf Police Station, said a team is on its way to the spot.

Mohammad Ali (80) was killed in landslide in Rajuarghona in Hwanok union of Maheshkhali upazila around 1:00am, said UP Chairman Mohammad Mosfata Kamal.

Local administration, police and representatives are trying to convince the residents living in risky areas to move but most of them are refusing to do so, he said.

Yesterday, eight people, including six Rohingyas, were killed in landslides due to heavy rain in Ukhia, Teknaf and Maheshkhali upazilas.
