As many as 16 people were killed on the spot and six others injured after lightning struck a wedding party boat in Shibganj, Chapainawabganj on Wednesday.
The incident took place in the Char Paka area, on the bank of Padma River, at 12 noon on Wednesday, according to police and local administration officials.
Shibganj police station OC Farid Hossain said the boat was carrying 21 people of a wedding party. It was crossing the Padma River when heavy rain started.
After the boat anchored on the riverbank, it was struck by lightning -- which left 16 members of the wedding party dead on the spot.
Locals soon after rescued six other injured and rushed them to a local hospital, said the OC.
Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sakib Al Rabbi said the local administration will provide financial help to the families of the deceased for funeral arrangements in line with government protocol.
