Narayanganj factory fire: Remains of 24 deceased handed over to families today

Families of 24 persons, who died in the fire at Hashem Food and Beverage Factory, received the remains at Dhaka Medical College morgue this afternoon.

The handover started around 1:45pm with presence of representatives from Narayanganj district administration and Criminal Investigation Department.

Identities of 45, out of 48 people, who died in the fire have been confirmed through DNA matching.

Twenty-four bodies kept at DMCH are being handed over today while the rest kept at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital morgue will be handed over on Saturday, said SM Mahfuzur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner of Narayanganj district administration.

Ambulance for carrying the bodies and funeral cost are being covered by Sajeeb Group which owned the Hashem foods factory, said Kazi Abdur Rahman, senior general manager of the group.

At least 51 workers and staffers died when the fire erupted in the factory on July 8. Forty-eight of them died, being trapped on the third floor with its lone exit locked, when the blaze engulfed the building.
