Exim Bank, Ron Sikder reach compromise

The Detective Branch of police has filed its final report in the attempt-to-murder case against Sikder Group managing director Ron Haque Sikder and director Dipu Haque Sikder filed by Exim Bank, saying that a misunderstanding has led to the filing of the case while the accused and the plaintiff have reached a compromise on the matter.

DB Gulshan division filed the final report at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court, Dhaka on 27 July relieving the accused of the charge in the much-talked-about case.

The hearing on the final report might take place after the court starts functioning fully, said the court’s additional public prosecutor Taposh Kumar Pal.

Exim Bank director retired lieutenant colonel Sirajul Islam, who filed the case on May, 2020 with the Gulshan police station, told New Age that Ron Sikder and some other officials had approached him two months ago and apologised for the incident.

Serajul alleged in the case statement on May 19, 2020 that Sikder Group MD and his brother abducted, tortured and intimidated Exim Bank managing director Md Haider Ali Mia and additional managing director Md Firoz Hossain on May 7 after they went to visit the group’s properties that were pledged as the security for a loan.

The Exim Bank officers were taken to Rupganj and Purbachal to assess the assets proposed as the collateral for the loan.

As the officers refused to evaluate the assets pledged for the mortgage as desired by Sikder Group, Haider Ali Mia was shot at in a Purbachal location but he escaped unhurt, the case statement said.

The case statement also said that both the bank officers were later forcibly taken to a house at Banani in Dhaka in that day where they were threatened and tortured and later released in the evening after taking their signatures on a blank sheet of paper in the presence of Ron and his brother.

The brothers fled to Bangkok on a private jet on May 25, a week after they were accused of assaulting the two officers of Export-Import Bank of Bangladesh Limited in a case.

Ron, however, secured bail from a Dhaka court, hours after he was arrested on arrival from Dubai at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on February 13.

Ron is now on bail while Dipu is still a fugitive staying abroad.

The police report said that the defendants and the accused had realised their mistakes and reached a compromise in an agreement on the case.

The two parties said that they wanted to move forward with mutual respect by ending the misunderstanding, added the police report.

The report mentioned that a firearm with 70 rounds of bullet had been seized from Sikder’s Banani residence. Referring to the ballistic and chemical reports on the firearm, the police said that they were not sure whether it was used or not.

DB Gulshan deputy commissioner Moshiur Rahman, also the case supervising officer, said that both parties had reached an agreement and made a compromise and the police thus filed their final report.

He refused to say anything more.
