Daily Covid cases cross 1,000 again in Bangladesh

The Directorate General of Health Services logged more than 1,000 daily Covid cases again on Monday after a gap of two days while the overall number of cases since the emergence of the disease in Bangladesh has climbed to 15,52,563.

The daily case figure had fallen below 1,000 after 130 days on Saturday in a continuation of a steady fall in infections since August.

The DGHS also recorded 25 new deaths in the 24-hour reporting period till 8:00am Monday, slightly more than the daily death figure reported the day before.

With the latest figure, the overall death count since the emergence of the disease on March 8, 2020 has reached 27,439.

Bangladesh passed its 38th epidemiological week on Sunday, marking about a 36 per cent fall in the weekly death count compared with the week before.

In the epidemiological week, 189 people died, with almost 70 per cent of the deaths occurring among people with the comorbidities of diabetes and high blood pressure, according to the DGHS.

People aged between 21 years and 30 years accounted for 3.7 per cent of Covid deaths in the 38th epidemiological week, marking a sharp rise in deaths in this age bracket in a week, compared to 0.7 per cent of deaths representing people of the age group in the previous epidemiological week.

The test positivity rate was 4.36 per cent as 27,787 samples were tested across Bangladesh in the latest reporting period.

Covid cases saw a steady spike after mid-May, immediately after the presence of the Delta variant of the coronavirus had been confirmed in the country.

The highest 16,230 daily Covid cases were logged on July 28, during the peak of the outbreak caused by the Delta variant.

Epidemiologists and public health experts have, however, warned that despite the decline in the case positivity rate and deaths, another Covid wave might take place if the health rules are not obeyed.

The latest 21 daily deaths occurred in 15 districts with the highest six deaths reported by Dhaka.

Thirteen of the fresh dead were women and the rest 12 men.

Government hospitals accounted for 20 deaths while five others died at private facilities, according to the DGHS report.

Division-wise, Dhaka reported the highest nine deaths followed by Chattogram with eight deaths, Khulna and Sylhet three deaths each and Rangpur two deaths.

Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Barishal divisions reported no deaths on Monday.

Fourteen of the fresh dead were aged above 60 years, six between 51 years and 60 years, three between 41 years and 50 years, one between 31 years and 40 years and another between 21 years and 30 years, according to the daily DGHS Covid update.
