Rape in Noakhali’s Begumganj: Delwar, Kalam get life term

A Noakhali court today sentenced two accused to life term imprisonment in a case filed for raping a woman in Begumganj upazila.

Each of the accused was also fined Tk 50,000, in default of which they will have to serve three more months in jail, reports our local correspondent.

The convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are Delwar Hossain alias Delu and his close associate Mohammad Ali alias Abul Kalam. They are residents of Eklashpur union parishad in Begumganj. The verdict of this case was announced after a long period of almost one year.

Judge Joynal Abedin of Noakhali Women and Child Repression Tribunal-1 declared the verdict in the presence of the accused around 11 am today. Advocate Mamunur Rashid Lablu ‍stood for the state while Advocate Mollah Habibur Rasul Mamun represented the plaintiff and Advocate Jasim Uddin Badal represented the accused.

According to court sources, a rape case was filed against two people on October 6, 2020 at Begumganj Police Station on charge of raping the woman twice. On February 18, charges were filed against the accused persons in court. The Police Bureau of Investigation was later assigned with the investigation. On December 15, 2020, the PBI filed the charge sheet in court.
