Govt not to take responsibility of victim customers: minister

The government will not take the responsibility of the customers who have suffered loss while dealing with e-commerce companies, said commerce minister Tipu Munshi on Friday.

He also said that the government should not take the responsibility as the customers did not inform the government prior to their investment for getting products in extremely low prices.

He, however, said that the government is taking steps against the fraudulent e-commerce companies.

There are about 20,000 e-commerce companies and allegations were brought against 10 to 12 companies, he said adding that thousands of people are engaged in the companies.

Customers suffered loss due to buying the products at very low prices, but the government wanted the companies to flourish as the sector was creating employment.

Tipu Munshi was talking with journalists after inaugurating an outlet of Diamond World jewellery shop at Golden Tower market in Rangpur in the afternoon.

About the onion price, he said that the price increased suddenly due to heavy rainfall in India.

‘Onion prices increased as it depends on export from our neighbouring country,’ he said, adding, ‘the price will fall here soon after the fall of the price in India. We have also started the market monitoring system,’ the minister added.

FBCCI vice-president Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu, Rangpur metropolitan police commissioner Mohammad Abdul Alim, Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Mostafa Sohrab Chowdhury Titu, Awami League district unit president Momotazuddin Ahamed were also present.
