UNHCR signs MOU to engage in Bhasan Char for Rohingya services

UN refugee agency on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bangladesh government for extending humanitarian services to Rohingya people of Myanmar living in Bhasan Char island.

The MoU — signed by UNHCR on behalf of UN agencies working on the Rohingya response in Bangladesh — established a common protection and policy framework for the Rohingya humanitarian response on the island.

Disaster and relief ministry secretary Mohammad Mohsin and UNHCR representative in Bangladesh Johannes Van der Klaauw signed the instrument in Dhaka for their respective side.

About 19,000 Rohingya people were relocated so far based on their voluntary choices from the camps in Cox’s Bazar to Bhasan Char island in Noakhali district.

The Bangladesh government has a plan to relocate about 81,000 more Rohingyas to the island in three months, Mohammad Mohsin said.

State minister for disaster and relief M Enamur Rahman and AB Tajul Islam, chairman of parliamentary standing committee on disaster and relief ministry, among others, attended the signing ceremony.
