Five to hang for murder of man in Rajshahi

A court in Rajshahi has awarded death penalties to five people over the murder of a man in the metrorpolitan city, 11 years ago.

The Speedy Trial Tribunal on Tuesday acquitted nine others in the case as the charges against them were not proven beyond reasonable doubt, said Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque Babu.

On March 15, 2010, Raju Ahmed was beaten and stabbed at the city’s New Market area over a land property dispute. He died at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital later in the day.

The victim’s father Esar Uddin started a murder case the next day. According to him, they had a feud with death row convict Mahbubur Rashid alias Rentu over a land plot.

The others who received capital punishment are Azizur Rahman alias Rajon, Sazzad Hossain alias Saju, Md. Rinku alias Boya and Ismail Hossain.

The court has also slapped a fine of Tk10,000 on each of the convicts.
