7-year-old raped in Dinajpur, 1 arrested

A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl in Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur.

Abdullah Al Azad, 27, was arrested from his home in Chakchaka village of the upazila on Tuesday, police said.

Citing witness accounts, Phulbari police station OC Ashraful Islam said the girl was playing outside when Azad lured her into a nearby paddy field and raped her. As locals rushed to the spot hearing the girl’s scream, Azad fled.

Later, the girl’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and Azad was arrested, the OC added.

A total of 813 girls were raped from January to August this year, according to data collected by the National Girl Child Advocacy Forum from reports published in 24 national newspapers.

Of the 813 rape survivors and victims, 110 were subjected to gang rape. According to the data, another 127 survived rape attempts.

The forum also found that 193 girls were killed across the country. Most of them were murdered after rape or rape attempts, and due to family disputes.
