News of crack in Ctg flyover all rumour: CDA chief engineer

The chief engineer of Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) today said that the news that there is a crack in one of the ramps of MA Mannan flyover in the port city is a rumour.

Md Mahfuzur Rahman, chief engineer (project) of CDA made the remark this evening after visiting the spot.

Police stopped vehicular movement on and under the flyover after a crack was reported in a ramp of MA Mannan Flyover around 10:00pm last night.

A team of CDA visited the flyover this afternoon and took a look at the ramps going towards Kalurghat of the flyover.

After inspection around 6:30pm, Chief Engineer Mahfuzur said "There is no crack in the flyover. This is a rumour."

"What is being described as a crack is the mark of shutter up-down. This was there since the inauguration of the flyover."

He added that an expert team from Dhaka will visit and observe the ramp on Wednesday.

Shahin-ul-Islam, chief engineer of Chattogram City Corporation said a crane is needed to go above the ramp to understand whether it is a crack or not.

"It seems like a crack from underneath. Expert can say whether it is a crack or not," he added.

He added that CDA was supposed to build a height barrier on the flyover but they did not.

The construction of a one-kilometer flyover connecting Shulakbahar and Bahaddarhat began in 2010. Thirteen people were killed when a part of the under-construction flyover collapsed in Chandgaon in November 2012. The flyover was being constructed by CDA.

The construction work was then handed over to the Bangladesh Army. On October 12, 2013, the Prime Minister officially inaugurated the flyover.
