Decision on salvaging sunken ferry soon; 500 trucks still waiting at Paturia

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has said that a decision on salvaging the sunken ferry Shah Amanat could come after a meeting today.

Zillur Rahman, deputy general manager (commerce) of the company's Aricha regional office, confirmed the development.

All officers involved in the rescue operation are in Dhaka, he said adding that a meeting is underway at the BIWTC head office.

A decision will be taken at the meeting on what to do to salvage the ferry, he said.

Around 8:30pm yesterday, Director (rescue) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority Fazlur Rahman said all the vehicles have been recovered from the river.

Shibalaya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Firoz Kabir, said the recovered vehicles were being handed over to the owners.

In the morning, rescue vessel Hamza was seen anchored at pontoon 5 and Rustam was seen at pontoon 4 at Paturia Ghat.

 Ferry movement on Paturia-Daulatdia route has been hampered due to the incident. Around 500 goods-laden trucks were seen waiting at Paturia Ghat till filing this report at noon.
