Gas connections snapped in Comilla after pipeline leak causes fire

Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited has cut off gas connections in several places in Comilla after one of its pipelines leaked late on Sunday causing a fire

"We have been forced to disconnect the gas lines due to the high risk of an accident," said the company’s Managing Director Shankar Majumder.

One of Bakhrabad’s gas supply lines next to Kotbari Nandanpur Highway in Comilla, which supplies gas to most areas of the city, leaked on Sunday night. A fire broke out from there and burnt down 14 shops.

For fear of a bigger accident, all gas lines were disconnected after the company failed to repair the leaked line till 1am on Monday.

Shankar Majumder said: "We tried till 1am but could not repair the line without the help of PDB (Power Development Board).

“The work started again around 8am on Monday. Customers will get gas connection back by evening.”

"We have to suffer from time to time due to mismanagement of the Rural Electrification Board," he added.

In September, a gas line burst and a fire broke out during a clean-up operation in Companiganj, Muradnagar, Comilla. At that time a CNG auto rickshaw was burnt and one seriously injured passenger died at the hospital.
