3 killed, dozens injured in clash over UP elections in Narsingdi

Three people have been shot dead in a clash between supporters of two rival candidates for the upcoming Alokbali Union Parishad (UP) in the Narsingdi district.

At least 50 people were injured in the clash which took place at Nekjanpur village of Alokbali Union around 5:30 am on Thursday.

Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Saheb Ali Pathan confirmed the news and said the police brought the situation under control, reports Prothom Alo.

The deceased were identified as Amir Hossain, 50, Ashraful, 20, and Khushu Begum, 55, all residents of Nekjanpur village in Sadar upazila.

According to police and locals, clashes have been raging between supporters of Alokbali Union chairman Delwar Hossain Dipu and union Awami League general secretary Asadullah over the second phase of UP election to be held on November 11. Even, a clash happened between the two groups 10 days ago.

Delwar Hossain Dipu has been re-nominated by Awami League in the UP elections. Asadullah was expecting nomination. He announced his candidature as an independent candidate without getting party nomination.

Asadullah later withdrew his nomination under pressure from party leaders and a tension had been simmering in the area since then.

Following that, the two groups got involved in a clash on Thursday morning. At least 50 people were injured when they attacked each other with guns and teta (a type of fishing spear).

Twenty-five of them were brought to the emergency department of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared the trio with bullet shots dead. Several others are undergoing treatment at the hospital, said Narsingdi Sadar Hospital Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Syed Amirul Haque to reporters.

The dead bodies have been kept in the morgue of Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, said Md Saugatul Alam, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station.

Ten others injured with bullet wounds have been shifted to Dhaka for better treatment, reports Bangla Tribune.

Police arrested a man named Taher from Narsingdi Sadar Hospital area in the incident.

Earlier, two people were shot dead in a clash between Awami League nominee and supporters of a rebel candidate in the Alokbali UP election on October 26. The deceased were identified as Shah Alam Khan, 45, and Qayyum Mia, 30, of Satpara village.
