CWASA increases water prices by 5pc

Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority on Thursday approved a proposal to increase water price by five per cent for domestic consumers from Tk 12.40 to Tk 13.02 per unit and from Tk 30.30 to Tk 31.82 per unit for commercial consumers.

CWASA board approved the proposal in its 64th meeting held at CWASA office Thursday, CWASA board member Mohsin Kazi told New Age.

He said that the proposal was made considering the production cost of supplied water.

The new price would be effective from January 1, 2022, he added.

Terming the water price hike as illogical, Consumers Association of Bangladesh vice president SM Nazer Hossain told New Age that CWASA took the decision against the interest of its consumers.

CWASA was not getting adequate revenue due to system loss and leakage and it should focus on that. CWASA should improve their quality, not increase the price, he said.

Earlier in March 2020, CWASA increased the water price by 5 per cent.

At present CWASA has 77, 265 billable connections. Of these, 71,992 are residential connections and 5,273 are non-residential connections, according to CWASA officials.
