Owners of public, goods transports call strike from Friday

The owners of public and goods transports from across the country on Thursday called a countrywide indefinite period strike from Friday demanding cancellation of the increased prices of diesel and kerosene.

The bus owners on the same day sent a letter to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority to increase the bus fare following the increase in fuel prices.

The government has increased the prices of diesel and kerosene by Tk 15 a litre with effect on Thursday.

The prices of diesel and kerosene have been increased to Tk 80 a litre from Tk 65, said a notification issued by the power and energy ministry.

Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van, Tank, Lorry and prime Mover Owners and Workers’ Coordination Council convener Rustom Ali Khan said on Thursday morning that if the authorities would not cancel the recent hike in fuel price, movement of all goods laden vehicles would be suspended from Friday.

‘How we can run our transports by spending more when we are already in losses for corona pandemic,’ he said.

A senior leader of Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association told New Age that though they did not give same instructions but transports associations from different districts would stop running buses from Friday with the same demand.

Already Rajshahi Road Transport Owners Association called strike from Friday.

Meanwhile, on the day, BRTOA sent a letter, signed by its secretary general Khandakar Enayetullah, to BRTA to increase bus fares.
