Authorities to hold meeting with launch operators over fare

Launch operators, who have been on a strike following a hike in diesel prices, are set for meeting with the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Sunday.

The meeting will take place at 3.30pm on Sunday at the BIWTA offices in Dhaka’s Motijheel, media reports quoted Shipping Ministry spokesperson Jahangir Alam Khan.

Mamunur Rashid, a director of the Launch Owners’ Association, told an online newspaper that representatives from their organization will attend the meeting with BIWTA Chairman Commodre Golam Sadeque.

On Wednesday, the government increased diesel and kerosene prices by Tk15 per litre — from Tk65 to Tk80 — in order to keep them in line with rising fuel prices in the global market.

In protest of the move, different associations of public and cargo transport owners and workers on Friday launched a strike for an indefinite period, inconveniencing commuters across the country.

Launch owners on Saturday joined the nationwide public transport strike to protest rising fuel prices.

They demand a 100% increase in fares to resume operations if the raised prices were maintained.
