Former UP chairman gunned down in Rajbari

Assailants have shot dead a former union parishad chairman in Rajbari, who wanted to contest the upcoming election.

Abdul Latif Mia, the president of the Awami League’s Banibaha union unit, was gunned down around 12 midnight on Thursday, said police.

He was rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. He died around 3.30am on Friday while being taken to Dhaka for advanced treatment, said Additional Superintendent of Police Md Salahuddin.

“Additional forces have been deployed in the area. We have launched raids to arrest the perpetrators,” he said.

According to locals, Latif was attacked some 300 yards from his home while returning from the Banibaha Bazar.

“We heard a scream and went outside to find a bullet-hit Latif,” said one Abul Quader, a local resident.

Latif was elected the Banibah union council chairman in the 2001 election. He was seeking the Awami League’s ticket for the upcoming polls, according to locals.

“Latif was busy with the elections. Unidentified people shot him while he was on his way home,” said incumbent UP Chairman Golam Mostofa Bachchu.
