Narayanganj gas line explosion death toll rises to two

At least two women have been killed and 10 others injured after the wall of a five-storied building collapsed following a gas leak explosion in Narayanganj’s Fatullah on Friday morning.

The deceased have been identified as 45-year-old Maya Rani and 25-year-old Mangali Rani, 25.

Maya died on the spot while Mangali died at the hospital while undergoing treatment for the head injuries she sustained.

Two of the injured Jhuma Rani, 19 and Tulsi Rani, 60, are undergoing treatment with 50% and 25% burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) burns unit, confirmed Police Outpost In-Charge Bacchu Mia confirmed.

Meanwhile, four people, Sudhan, 34, Shourav, 22, Sohel 12 and Moni, 28 have been discharged after being given primary treatment.

According to a senior fire service official, the explosion was likely triggered by a gas leak in the house when someone lighted the stove.

Locals rushed to the scene in Fatullah’s Lalkha area after hearing an explosion around 7am.

Two fire-fighting units reached the scene to put out the fire, said Narayanganj Fire Service Deputy Director Abdullah Al Arefin.

He added that the injured have been taken to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute and Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) burn unit for treatment.

According to fire service, the local administration has formed a seven-member committee to probe the matter.
