Oil tanker explosion on Sugandha River leaves one dead, seven burnt

An oil tanker explosion in Jhalakathi’s Sugandha River has left a man dead and seven others injured.

The vessel named Sagar Nandini-3, carrying petrol and diesel, exploded on the south bank of the river on Friday morning.

Later, a team of firefighters went to the spot and brought the fire under control, confirmed Md Shahidul Islam, an official of the Jhalakathi Fire Service.

A large fire broke out after explosion occurred in the pipe which was being used to empty oil from the vessel’s pump room. The fire quickly spread throughout the ship. However, the cause of the blast was not immediately known, he added.

The deceased was identified as Kamrul Islam, the driver of the vessel.

Seven other crew members were burnt and seriously injured in the incident. The injured were rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and later referred to hospitals in Dhaka for better treatment.

A committee will be formed to investigate the incident, said Jhalakathi Deputy Commissioner Md Johar Ali.
