No scope to raise questions over UP polls: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda has said there is no scope of raising questions on the issue of Union Parishad (UP) elections due to some stray incidents of violence that took place during the polls.

Ongoing staggered UP election is taking place competitively, and turnout was around 74 percent, that proves it is being held in a festive mood, the CEC said while addressing at a press conference at the Election Commission Bhaban in Dhaka's Agargaon today.

The remarks come at a time when at least 26 people have been killed in pre-and-post-poll violence centring the second phase of the UP elections held on November 11, amid a low turnout.

Earlier, six people were killed during the first phase of the UP polls in June and September.

"Some violence took place centring election that was unexpected and unacceptable. According to media analysis, establishing supremacy in the locality, personal enmity, political conflict, and others were among the reasons behind the incidents of violence," Huda said.

Media reported that people were killed in the violence but it is matter of investigation whether these incidents of violence took place revolving around polls, he added.

However, he differed from Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar's viewpoint, who said, "Election is now in 'ICU' and democracy on 'life support'," by stating, "I don't believe that there is no proper atmosphere for election."

The comments that EC Mahbub Talukdar made are not decent, Nurul said.
