Protesting rape threat by bus driver, students block Dhaka's Bakshibazar road

Students from various institutions, including Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls College, in Dhaka have blocked Bakshibazar road -- protesting rape threats made by a local bus driver and helper after a female student offered half fare.

They were spotted on the road close to their college, shouting slogans demanding that the bus staff be punished, and that all students be allowed to pay half bus fare and be treated respectfully.

"Half pass is our right," posters they were carrying read.

Dhaka College student Saiful Islam said the government has been given a 24-hour ultimatum to bring the driver and helper to justice and ensure half bus fare for all students.

They will protest again tomorrow if their demands are not met, they said.
