Four Cox’s Bazar schoolboys allegedly abducted by Rohingya men

Families of four schoolboys in Cox’s Bazar have alleged that the teenagers have been abducted by Rohingya refugees and claimed of receiving ransom calls.

The boys, who study at Sonarpara High School in Ramu Upazila, have been missing since Tuesday, OC Arup Kumar Chowdhury of the local police said, quoting family members.

They are Mohammad Kaiser, 14, Mizanur Rahman Nayan, 14, Jahedul Islam, 15, and Mizanur Rahman, 14.

Two Rohingyas, Jahangir Alam and Mohammad Ibrahim, recently became acquainted with the teenagers and took them away to Huaikyong of Teknaf on the pretext of taking them to Saint Martin’s Island on a trip, according to local resident Abdus Shukkur.

The families received phone calls demanding a ransom of Tk20 lakh on Wednesday when the police were notified, he said.

“The matter falls under the jurisdiction of Teknaf police station, but we will assist them in investigating the incident,” said Ramu police station OC Arup Kumar Chowdhury.

Suspects Jahangir and Ibrahim are residents of Nayapara Rohingya camp and worked at a local resort, according to locals.
