B’baria gun attack: Injured UP chairman candidate dies

A chairman candidate of the upcoming UP elections died nearly three hours after he was shot in Brahmanbaria's Nabinagar upazila last night.

Md Serajul Islam, additional superintendent of police of Nabinagar Circle, confirmed the death of the chairman candidate Ershadul Haque (35), son of the incumbent chairman of Natghar union parishad Abul Kashem, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.

One of his associates -- Badal Sarkar (23), of Nandura village under the same union -- died on the spot when miscreants carried out the attack at Natghar village in Natghar union of the upazila around 10:00 pm yesterday.

The incident took place when Ershadul and Badal were returning from a locally organised Waz Mahfil at Kurighar Bazar by a motorcycle.

Locals rushed them to Brahmanbaria General Hospital where doctors declared Badal dead and referred Ershad to Dhaka as his condition was serious.

Ershadul died around 1:45 am when the ambulance carrying him reached Narsingdi.

Ali Haider Al Razi Osmani, on-duty doctor at the emergency department of Brahmanbaria General Hospital, told The Daily Star that Ershadul had three bullet marks on his body.

Brahmanbaria additional superintendent of police (administration and crime) Mollah Mohammad Shaheen told The Daily Star that he had visited the spot.

Police are trying to arrest those involved in the incident, the police official said adding that additional police were deployed on the spot.
