TIB demands law to form EC

Transparency International Bangladesh on Monday demanded that the government should enact a law immediately to appoint the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners.

‘President Md Abdul Hamid has started a dialogue with political parties. It has importance. But it is not enough. Formation of EC through such move has failed to address the people’s expectations,’ TIB said in a statement.

TIB executive director Iftekharuzzaman said that most political parties have no interest in the talks initiated by the president.

‘Policymakers of the parties do not believe there is any possibility of a positive discussion about the formation of a law to form the EC,’ he added.

He said that the people of the country expected the president to take the necessary move to form an independent and natural EC.

He said that two previous ECs that were formed through such search committee and dialogue were heavily criticised.

The president started his talks to form the next Election Commission through a meeting with the Jatiya Party on Monday.

According to Bangabhaban, the parties that have representation in the Jatiya Sangsad have been invited to join the dialogue.

Currently, there are 39 political parties registered with the Election Commission but only nine of them have representations in the parliament.
