Several fires across country due to rogue sky lanterns during New Year’s celebrations

Multiple incidents of fire were reported across the country, including several in the capital, over rogue sky lanterns crashing on rooftops and houses, during New Year's celebrations in the early hours today.

"We have received reports of several fire incidents, including at seven places in Dhaka alone," Ershad Hossain, duty-officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters.

He however said that most of the fires that broke out were minor incidents and most of the blazes were doused by the locals.

Meanwhile, two firefighting units brought a major fire under control around 12:55 am that broke out at the rooftop of a three-storey building in Dhaka's Matuail due to a crashed lantern, said Majharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station.

There have been no reports of injuries, he added.
