3 including 2 siblings dead in fire at Uttara

Three teenagers, including two siblings, died after a fire broke out at a tin-shed room in Dhaka's Uttara area early today.

The deceased were identified as Jahangir Hossain (19), his sister Ruma Akter (17) and their cousin Afrin (14).

The fire originated at the room in Chandalbuk Manik Bosti area around 4:15am.

On information, three firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after one and a half hours of frantic efforts, said Khaleda Akter, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Control Room.

Later, the bodies were recovered from the room, she added.

Electric short circuit was suspected as the cause of fire, fire service officials said.

The victims might have died due to electrocution before the fire spread or suffocation during the fire as their burn injuries were not severe, said Mohammad Rasel, station officer of Uttara Fire Station.

The bodies were handed over to police for necessary legal formalities.
