Road accidents kill 6,284 in 2021 in Bangladesh: report

At least 6,284 people were killed and 7,468 others were injured in 5,371 road accidents across Bangladesh in 2021, said a report published by the Road Safety Foundation on Saturday.

In same year, at least 159 others were killed, 192 others were injured and 47 remained missing in 76 waterway accidents and 147 were killed and 39 were injured in 123 railways accidents, the report said.

The number of road accidents increased by 13.43 per cent; the number of deaths increased by 15.7 per cent and the number of injured increased by 1.2 Per cent in 2021 compared with 2020.

The major portion of the road accidents involved motorcycles while, compared with 2020, in 2021 the number of road accidents involving motorcycles increased by 50.47 per cent and deaths in these accidents increased by 51.33 per cent.

The report was prepared on the basis of news coverage of accidents published in seven national daily newspapers, five online news portals and television channels, said a press release of the organisation on Saturday.

In the road accidents among the fatal victims 2,214 were motorcycle drivers and their pillion riders, 934 were passengers of three-wheeler vehicles including CNG-run auto-rickshaws, 457 were illegal passengers of goods-laden vehicles including trucks and covered vans, 389 were bus passenger, 359 were passengers of locally made vehicles including Nasimon, Karimon, bhatbhati and others, 276 were car and microbus passengers and 132 were rickshaw and van passengers.
