Fresh Covid restrictions largely ignored

The 11-point fresh restrictions, imposed by Bangladesh government, on overall public movement and businesses were seen largely ignored on the first day on Thursday, due to poor monitoring of the authorities concerned.

People were seen gathering at shopping malls, shops, kitchen market and on public transports without wearing mask maintaining health rules.

Most of the vendors at Jigatola Kitchen Market, Mohammadpur Town Hall Market, Mirpur-6 Kitchen market, Gausia and New Market were seen ignoring health rules by not wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

Mahmud Hasan, a buyer at the Mirpur-6 kitchen market said, ‘Most of the people and vendors in the market area are not wearing mask’.

While conducting mobile court at Shahbagh, Dhaka Metropolitan Police executive magistrate Sanjib Das said, ‘We are fining people for not wearing mask in open places and on public transports’.

He said that they fined Tk 50 to Tk 200 for not wearing mask.

Asked about the health rules violations in kitchen markets, shops and restaurants, he said, ‘Today is the first day of the restrictions. We will also conduct mobile courts in kitchen markets, shopping malls, shops and restaurants from Saturday to reduce the health rules violations’.

Against the backdrop, the government on Monday issued 11 guidelines, including mandatory use of facemask and ban on rallies and public gatherings for social, religious and political purposes.

The restrictions imposed at a time when elections to local government bodies are also being held at places across Bangladesh.
