SUST protests: Police sue over 200 ‘unnamed’ students

Police last night filed a case, accusing over 200 "unnamed" students, in connection with the clash at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Sunday evening.

Sub-inspector (SI) Md Abdul Hannan of Jalalabad Police Station filed the case with the station and the case was handed over to SI Md Asaduzzaman for investigation.

Azbahar Ali Sheikh, deputy commissioner (north) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) confirmed the development.

However, he claimed that the case is just a formality as police were attacked and firearms were used to control the situation.

"No students will be harassed and this was not done to intimidate them," he said.

According to the case statement, during the protest for the three-point demand, students confined the university's vice-chancellor and obstructed police officers from performing their duties.

The students also "attempted to snatch police officers' government-issued firearms, threw bricks at law enforcers, shot fire, and blasted crude bombs at police personnel," according to the statement. To keep the situation under control, police used 31 rubber bullets and 21 sound grenades.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students have gathered in front of the SUST Vice-Chancellor's residence on campus today -- demanding his resignation.

A delegation of the Bangladesh Awami League, led by its central Organising Secretary Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, came to express solidarity and participate in the signature campaign during the protest.

A personal secretary of Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, who is also lawmaker from Sylhet-1, paid a visit last night. The minister expressed solidarity and assured students that police riot vehicles would be removed from campus.

The students also demanded resignation of the VC and appointment of a new VC in an open letter to President Abdul Hamid, who is the university's chancellor.

Today, they will send the letter to Bangabhaban via the government postal service.

Three days after their three-point, including the resignation of a hall provost, were not met, the demonstrators confined VC Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed inside the MA Wazed Miah IICT Building on Sunday afternoon.

Police later charged truncheons on the demonstrators to free the VC, leading to a clash.

Police then shot rubber bullets and exploded sound grenades to bring the situation under control.

At least 30 students were injured.
