At least three killed as train hits auto-rickshaw in Nilphamari

At least three people were killed and six more were injured when a passenger train hit an auto-rickshaw at a level crossing in Dhonipara area at Shonara of Nilphamari Sadar upazila on Wednesday morning.

The level crossing was illegal and as per primary information the accident took place due to dense fog, according to the police.

The deceased were identified as Romana Akhter, Shefali Begum, and Sayra Banu (Chhaya).

Nilphamari sadar police officer-in-charge Md Abdur Rouf said that around 7:00am the Shimanto Express was going to Khulna from Chilahati.

When the train reached at Dhonipara area, it hit the auto-rickshaw which was on the level crossing, he said.

He also said that during the accident there were eight more passengers along with the vehicle’s driver.

Following the accident one passenger died on the spot, he continued.

‘Two more passengers died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital and the rest were under treatment at the hospital,’ the officer said.

He mentioned that the level crossing was illegal.

‘During the accident there was dense fog which could be the reason for the accident,’ he added.
