Gazette of EC formation bill published, President to form search committee

The government on Sunday published the gazette notification of ‘Appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners Bill-2022’ passed in the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) last week.

As per the law, president M Abdul Hamid can form a search committee for the formation of next election commission (EC) that would oversee the 12th parliament election.

The law states that the six-member search committee will be led by an Appellate Division justice. The committee will recommend names of 10 people after scrutinising their qualifications. The president will form the five-member commission from them.

Earlier, on Saturday, a media release issued by parliament secretariat said president M Abdul Hamid gave his approval to the ‘Appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners Bill-2022’.

Law minister Anisul Haque placed the bill in parliament on 23 January. Twelve MPs of the BNP, Jatiya Party and Gonoforum took part in discussion about the bill and proposed to send it for seeking public review and the amendment of the bill.

The bill was passed in voice vote without any major change. However, several minor amendment proposals were accepted, including one of the two noted citizens will be female. Besides, the search committee has been asked to propose the names within 15 working days which was 10 days earlier.

The name of the bill has also been changed.
