Prosecution claims Kishore posting anti-govt remarks from abroad

Prosecution has claimed that cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore is now abroad and has been posting anti-government remarks on Facebook.

Prosecutor Nazrul Islam Shamim claimed it before the court during today's hearing.

Kishore and six others are accused of spreading rumours and carrying out anti-government activities under the Digital Security Act.

Meanwhile, Kishore's lawyer Jaydur Rahman submitted an application, seeking an adjournment of the charge framing hearing in the case.

In the application, he told the court that he had been trying to communicate with his client over phone but his phone was found switched off. So, the hearing should be adjourned, the lawyer added.

The other accused in the case are Minhaj Mannan Emon, managing director of BLE Securities and shareholder-director of Dhaka Stock Exchange; Didarul Islam, a member of politico-civic organisation called Rashtrachinta; Hungry-based entrepreneur Zulkarnain Saer Khan alias Sami; journalist Tasneem Khalil who runs Netra News; Ashik Imran; and Shapan Wahed.

Upon hearing both sides, Judge Mohammad Ash Sams Joglul Hossain of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal said the court is giving Kishore a last chance today.

If he fails to comply with the court order, arrest warrant will be issued on the next scheduled date -- February 27 -- and charges will be framed against him in absentia.

Minhaj and Didarul, now on bail, were present in the court today.

The case was filed against Kishore and 10 others with Ramna Police Station in May 2020.

On September 12 last year, the same tribunal accepted the charges against Kishore and six others and issued arrest warrants against Sami and three others as they were shown "fugitives" in the charge sheet.

But police failed to arrest them as the four live abroad.

Writer Mushtaq Ahmed's name was dropped from the charge sheet as he died at Kashimpur High Security Jail on February 25 last year.

The tribunal also relieved US-based journalist Shahed Alam; Germany-based blogger Asif Mohiuddin and Philip Schuhmacher as the IO dropped their names from the charges as he did not find their involvement with the incident.
