Five people were killed in a collision between a sand-laden vessel and a soil-laden trawler in the River Dakatia of Maminpur in Chandpur Sadar upazila on Monday morning.
The deceased were identified as Md Mobarak, 45, Md Aowal, 50, Md Nasir, 32, Al Amin, 35, and Nazrul, 35.
Chandpur fire service deputy assistant director Shahedul Islam, quoting local people, said that the accident took place due to dense fog in the river.
Following the collision both the vessels sank in the river along with 11 passengers, and of them, six managed to swim ashore while the rest five remained missing, the fire service official said.
Local people rescued one of the missing people from the river, but he died after a while.
Later, divers of Chandpur fire service recovered the bodies of the rest four.
