Two missing after 18 fishing trawlers capsize due to storm in Bay of Bengal

As many as 18 trawlers have capsized in the Bay of Bengal during a storm near Dublar Char late on Friday night.

Two fishermen, Md Sahinur and Md Motassir, both hailing from Bagerhat’s Rampal are missing, confirmed Sundarban East Forest Division Officer Belayet Hossain and Dubla Fishermen Group President Kamal Uddin Ahmed.

According to people familiar with the matter, nearly 30,000 fishermen came to Dubla to process dry fish last November and had been living there since then.

Some of them went to the sea to catch fish on Friday but 18 trawlers capsized due to a sudden storm at the Bay.

Around 158 fishermen were able to return but two are still missing, said Kamal Uddin Ahmed.

He added that around 100 trawlers have been delegated to rescue the fishermen.

The coast guard is yet to comment on the matter.
