Search Committee to seek names from registered political parties

The Search Committee, formed on Saturday to pick the names of the chief election commissioner and other election commissioners, in its first meeting on Sunday decided to seek names of probable candidates from the registered political parties.

The six-member committee with Appellate Division judge Obaidul Hassan in the chair also decided to take suggestions from the civil society members, election experts and the distinguished media personalities by holding meetings on Saturday and Sunday, cabinet secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam told reporters after the meeting.

The secretary said that the registered political parties would be notified through the website of the cabinet division and would request them to give names of the probable candidates of their choice through emails of the respective parties.

He said that individual candidates, if wanted to be commissioners, could also give their names to the cabinet division through email.

The secretary said that the committee would send 10 names to the president within 15 working days to appoint the chief election commissioner and four other election commissioners.

The committee members will sit again on Tuesday, he added.

The six members of the committee that include Justice Obaidul Hassan, High Court judge Justice SM Kuddus Zaman, former election commissioner Muhammed Sohul Hossain, writer Professor Anowara Syed Haque, comptroller and auditor general of Bangladesh Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, and Bangladesh Public Service Commission chair Mohammed Sohrab Hossain took the decision in a meeting at the Supreme Court judges’ lounge for more than three hours in the afternoon.
