Death reference of Major Sinha murder case reaches HC

The documents of Major (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan murder case, in which suspended police officials Pradeep Kunar Das and Liaqat Ali were sentenced to death, have reached as death reference to the High Court for the examination of the trial court verdict.

Officials of the Cox's Bazar court concerned brought the documents of the case, including the judgment, to the HC today, Supreme Court Spokesman Saifur Rahman told The Daily Star.

If a lower court sentences any person to death in a case, its judgment is examined by the HC through hearing arguments for confirmation of the death sentence.

The case documents and judgment reach the HC as death reference from the lower court after the latter delivers the verdict as per relevant provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

On January 31, Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Ismail sentenced Pradeep and Liaqat to death and also six others to life term imprisonment for killing Major (retd) Sinha.

The six are dismissed Sub-Inspector (SI) Nandadulal Rakkhit, constables Sagar Deb and Rubel Sharma and police informants Md Nezamuddin, Nurul Amin and Ayaz Uddin.

Sinha's elder sister filed the murder case with Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court against Pradeep, Nandadulal and several others on August 5 in 2020.
