CEC Huda: Election Commission did its duty as per the law

The incumbent Election Commission did its duty neutrally and as per the law, says outgoing Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda.

“We have tried to be completely impartial,” he said while speaking to the media on Sunday.

He added that the commission has always carried out its duty within the limits of the law.

Saying that criticism is part of Bangladeshi culture, he added: “I think I have been successful. We completed all the elections.”

Responding to queries on whether all the elections were fair, he said: “I’m not going to say all of them were fair. There was violence and then there were instances of ballot snatching. That is just how elections are.”

According to the top election official, the voter turnout in the elections was around 70% ,which in itself is a success.

He, however, refused to comment further on his remarks regarding Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder’s medical expenses.

The incumbent commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, will run its term on February 14.

The government has already formed a Election Commission Search Committee responsible for forming a new commission.
