Search committee still waits for names from BNP, other parties

The Election Commission formation search committee is still waiting for names from main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and other registered political parties that were yet to propose names for EC formation.

‘The Search Committee told us that they would receive names from BNP and other political parties if they give even before finalizing of ten names to submit the president,’ journalist Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul told reporters emerging from a talk with the committee at the Supreme Court Judges Lounge in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Tuesday.

He said that the committee would end its task by February 24.

The committee earlier extended 24-hour time for name submission by BNP and 14 other political parties and the time ended on Monday 5:00pm.

On Monday, the Cabinet Division published 322 names which the political parties, professional bodies and individuals proposed to the search committee for the next Election Commission.

BNP and some left-leaning political parties did not propose any name for the EC search committee.

On February 5, a six-member search committee was formed under the ‘Appointments of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners Act-2022’. The search committee will propose 10 names to the President for appointing the new CEC and the Election Commissioners.

The search committee held talks with civil society representatives and media personnel on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
