Was ACC official Sharif sacked for exposing the powerful?: TIB

Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) today urged the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to dispel doubt and confusion which arose centring the removal of its official Sharif Uddin to ensure trust on the commission.

The termination of Sharif Uddin, deputy assistant officer of ACC, caused a negative reaction in and outside the commission with ACC officials taking to the street to protest the decision, which is an unprecedented incident, TIB in a press statement said today.

"Sharif exposed the land acquisition syndicate which siphoned off public money, forgery in issuing national identity card and passport, irregularities in Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company with skill. The question naturally appears whether Sharif was sacked for his role in exposing the powerful," the statement read.

It said as per the service rule of ACC, it reserves the right to sack any official. "But the question arises why the commission chose the way of sacking him other than protecting such a skilled and honest official? People have the right to know."

TIB in its statement urged ACC to clarify its position. "Otherwise, the trust and people's confidence in it will face a serious crisis. Such confusion and doubt on the removal of such an official will dishearten other officials and weaken their spirit in fighting corruption."
