AL leader shot dead in Kushtia

A local Awami League leader was shot to death and three others injured in broad daylight by a group of assailants at village Chandpur of Bheramara upazila in Kushtia on Friday.

The deceased, Siddiqur Rahman Siddique, 50, son of Wombor Mondol, a resident of the village in the upazila, was the general secretary of Chandpur union parishad ward Awami League.

The identities of the injured could not be known immediately, police officials said.

Quoting local people, Bheramara police officer-in-charge Mojibur Rahman said that a group of miscreants attacked Siddique and three others while they were working in the field at about 9:00am.

The assailants, at one stage, shot them and left the place, leaving four people including Siddique seriously injured.

Later, local people rescued the injured and sent them to Kushtia General Hospital for treatment where on duty doctors declared Siddique dead.

On information, a team of police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.

He might have been killed over previous enmity, the police official suspected. Police are trying to arrest the accused involved in the incident, the OC added.
