‘Banglar Samriddhi’ crew arrives in Bangladesh

The 28 crew members of Bangladeshi ship "Banglar Samriddhi", who were stranded in war-ravaged Ukraine, have arrived in Bangladesh.

They landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at noon on Wednesday, Group Captain Tawhid Al Ahsan, executive director of the airport, told Dhaka Tribune.

The sailors had left Romania on a Turkish Airlines flight on Tuesday night.

The body of the ship’s third engineer Hadisur Rahman, who was killed in a rocket attack on the ship, has been preserved in a bunker near Ukraine and it will be brought back later.

The crew members arrived in the Romanian capital of Bucharest on March 6 from Ukraine through Moldova, according to Bangladesh Ambassador to Romania Daud Ali.

The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) ship got stranded in Ukraine as Russia’s invasion of its eastern European neighbour started soon after it anchored at Olvia port on February 23.
