Two teens die trying to save friend from drowning in Padma

Two teenagers drowned in the Padma River in Rajshahi while trying to save their friend from drowning on Friday.

The deceased are Nirab, 14, and Shahil, 17, both eighth-graders at the local Loknath High School and Rajshahi Shikkha Board Govt Model School and College, respectively.

The incident took place around 11:30pm in the Boro Kuthi area of the city, said Boalia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazharul Islam.

According to locals, some 10 teenagers went to take a bath in the river.

When one of them, Sajed, suddenly started drowning, Nirab and Shahil went to save him, but died while trying to do so.

None of the three knew how to swim, said the OC.

Upon being informed, Fire Service personnel rushed to the spot and took Nirab and Shahin to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty pronounced them dead, added the police officer.
