Primary schools to remain open until 20th Ramadan

State minister for primary and mass education Md Zakir Hossain on Saturday said that all the government primary schools would remain open until 20th Ramadan.

The state minister made the announcement while speaking at a ceremony marking the founding centenary of Khanjanmara Government Primary School under Roumari upazila in Kurigram as the chief guest, said a press release issued by the ministry.

He said that the decision was taken to compensate the learning loss during the closure of educational institutions due to Covid pandemic.

As the children are the future of the country, there is no alternative without continuing study, he said.

Presided over by Roumari upazila education officer Nazrul Islam, the ceremony was also addressed by Roumari upazila parishad chairman Sheikh Abdullah and upazila nirbahi officer Al Imran, among others.

Students joined in-person classes at primary schools across the country amid festive mood on March 2 after over a month of Covid closure.

The in-person classes in all the educational institutions remained suspended between January 21 and February 21 following a government order due to increase in the coronavirus infections, specially, the omicron variant.

Classes resumed at secondary schools and higher educational institutions on February 22.

Before that, the government kept all educational institutions shut for more than one and a half years between March 18, 2020 and September 11, 2021 due to the Covid situation.

According to a UNICEF report, Bangladesh has seen the second longest closure of schools in the world due to Covid-19.
