Relatives of PM, ministers get Swadhinata awards: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said that Awami League indulged in corruption even over the Swadhinata Award, the highest civilian award of the county.

He made the allegation at a discussion, organised by the BNP’s National Committee on Celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Independence and the Treatment and Service Committee, at the National Press Club.

Fakhrul said that former president Ziaur Rahman had introduced the Swadhinata Award, but the Awami League had tainted the award.

He said that this time the awards are being given to the relatives of the ministers and the prime minister.

‘They [AL] gave the award to a person named Amir Hamza and at one stage they cancelled his award. Who are the others to get it? Most of them are relatives of the ministers or relatives of the prime minister. Only they have been given the award,’ he said.

Fakhrul said that the Awami League was running false propaganda to mislead people in the name of development.

‘Commodity prices have risen to such a way that people can’t survive,’ he said.

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said that the Awami League had spoiled the parliamentary election system by cancelling the provision of caretaker government.
