Government heading in wrong direction: Zafrullah

Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and freedom fighter Zafrullah Chowdhury on Thursday said that the government was heading towards a wrong direction and making wrong steps in resolving the ongoing crisis of Bangladesh.

He said this while addressing a rally organised by Bhashani Onusrari Parisad in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka protesting at the abnormal rise in prices of essential commodities and at the moves to increase the prices of gas, electricity and water.

Zafrullah, also the chairman of Bhasahni Onusrari Parishad, said that government activities that were going against the will of the people also bringing sufferings to the people.

He added that public desire could only be reflected in a free and fair election.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD president ASM Abdur Rob said that the government did not care about the sufferings of the people.

Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna criticised a statement of a minister who said that the public purchase capacity had increased threefold in past a decade.

‘It is a complete bluff. The people of the country should take to the streets and protest against such outright lies,’ he added.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki said that the government caused economic hardship to people by constantly increasing the prices of essential commodities and utility services.

‘People’s hard-earned money was being syphoned off from the country by corrupt government officials. The government allows such activities as it does not care about the wellbeing of the people’, Zonayed added.

Jatiya Party faction chairman Mostafa Jamal Haider, Kalyan Party chairman Syed Muhammad Ibrahim, Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq, Rastra Sanskar Andolan coordinator Hasant Quayium, Bhashani Onusari Parishad secretary general Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu and central leader Jahangir Alam Mintu also spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a procession.
