58 people, mostly Rohingya, rescued from sea while being trafficked to Malaysia

Members of Rapid Action Battalion rescued fifty-eight people off Teknaf coast in Cox's Bazar while they were being trafficked to Malaysia by a trawler through the Bay of Bengal.

Lt Col Khairul Islam Sarker, commander of Rab-15, confirmed the matter to our Cox's Bazar staff correspondent.

Rab also arrested two members of human trafficking gang and seized the trawler around 4:30am during their operation, he added.

Among the 58 rescued people, 57 are Rohingya refugees and one Bangladeshi, the Rab official said.

Of them, 11 are children, and 24 women. The 57 Rohingyas are residents of different refugee camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf, he added.

Details regarding the incident will be revealed in a press conference later in the day, the official added.
