Eight arrested over Benapole clash, trade resumes

Trade at Benapole land port resumed on Tuesday morning after around 24 hours of suspension following a clash between two groups over taking control of the port’s contracting job.

Import-export activities and loading and unloading of goods resumed at about 10:00am again and 50 trucks entered the land port from India with imported goods until 11:00pm, said Abdul Jalil, deputy director (traffic) of Benapole land port.

Meanwhile, a case was filed against 36 people in connection with the clash and eight people were arrested, said Kamal Hossain Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Benapole port police station.

On Monday, at about 11:00am, two groups locked in a clash and exploded several bombs leaving a police member and seven workers injured.

Trade between the two countries, including unloading of goods, was suspended due to the clash, said the port authority.

OC Kamal Hossain said a private vehicle, one imported arm, five rounds of bullets, and two unexploded bombs were recovered from the port area on Monday night.

Additional policemen have been deployed at the land port area to keep the situation under control, he said.
